How to Use Van Van Oil
Since Van Van oil is an “all purpose” Hoodoo conjure oil, used for everything from drawing love to banishing evil, make sure you keep your intent clear when using it.
As a Cologne or Perfume To Attract Love
The simplest use of Van Van is to wear it! Splash a few dabs on your neck or shoulder to draw love to you.
To Open Roads to New Opportunities
Candles are used frequently in Hoodoo spells, and are usually dressed with a conjure oil like Van Van to help direct the spell. If you’re looking for a new opportunity, like a new job, you can dress a green pillar candle with a few drops of Van Van oil.
If you’re a Christian you can say Psalm 4 as you light the candle. If you’re not a Christian, you can instead clearly say your intent out loud, calling on your ancestors for aid.
Either way, make sure you keep your intent firm in your mind as you watch the candle burn. Every time you look at the candle, renew your intent for the spell.
To Bring Someone Back
In the 1930s, Harry Middleton Hyatt traveled around the American South interviewing Hoodoo practitioners. His compiled interviews, published as “Hoodoo – Conjuration – Witchcraft – Rootwork” spans thousands of pages, and includes a spell using Van Van oil to bring someone back into your life, like a straying husband.
- Take a picture of the person and turn it towards the wall.
- Write the name of the person on a piece of paper three times, one above the other. Then turn the paper 90 degrees, and write the person’s name again 6 times, over the names you just wrote.
- Put the piece of paper in a bottle and add 7 drops of Van Van oil and Florida Water.
According to the Hoodoo practitioner in Hyatt’s book, every time you shake the bottle it will disturb the person’s mind until they come back.
In a Mojo Bag for Gambling
You can create a Mojo bag, also called a gris gris, to bring you good luck at the gambling tables using Van Van oil. Take a square piece of red flannel, and in the center put a spoonful of cinnamon, a spoonful of sugar, and a pair of dice. Tie up the flannel around the ingredients, and keep it your pocket.
Mojo bags must be “fed” to keep the spirit in them alive. For this mojo bag, feed it 9 drops of Van Van oil every 9 days.
As a Spiritual Cleansing Bath
Hoodoo places a lot of emphasis on spiritual cleansing, and some kind of cleansing should be performed before any other work is done. In “Charms, Spells, and Formulas”, author Ray T. Malbrough states that adding 9 drops of Van Van oil to bath water for 9 days can accomplish this.
To Ward Evil From Your Home
Floor washes are a common way in Hoodoo to protect yourself and everyone in your house. To create a protective floor wash, add the following ingredients to a bucket filled with water:
- 5 drops of Van Van oil
- 1 spoonful of sugar
- 1 spoonful of cinnamon
- 3 drops of rose water
You should start scrubbing your house just before the sun rises, and work your way outward, not inward, to push out any evil that may already be there.
